I thought it was an old scar
and that poking at it, prodding
would be a bit uncomfortable
but nothing too terrible

It wasn’t a scar
but a scab
and fresh pain,
fresh blood
Are still too close to the surface
And I should not be picking at it
— doing homemade restorative surgery, as I am wont to do
and drawing fresh blood may not
help it heal more solidly next time

It will end up not a scar, but
yet another bandaid, well disguised.
